SAGINAW, Mich. - The Saginaw Fire Department held their awards ceremony Tuesday morning.

Congressman Dan Kildee was on hand to honor this year's Firefighter of the Year.

Battalion Chief Gregory Simmons led the department through the transition to its new online reporting system, and other technological advances.

He also saved the city a significant amount of money by lowering fleet maintenance costs.

"Growing up as a son of a firefighter in Saginaw, I knew what the family was like here too so it was awesome to be able to walk into this job and know that I had another great family of people to work with and that's truly what it is here at the Saginaw Fire Department; it's family," said Firefighter of the Year award recipient Gregory Simmons.

As part of the ceremony, Congressman Kildee presented Simmons with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol.
