Police say a 61-year-old man from Lum was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident after hitting a deer.

It happened around 2 a.m. Sunday in the area of Burnside and Slattery roads in Lapeer County’s North Branch Township.

Police were called to the scene after a motorist reported seeing him in the roadway.

The police investigation determined that Douglas Secord was traveling west on Burnside Road when a deer ran out in front of him.

Police say Secord was ejected from his motorcycle, and was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Additionally, Secord's motorcycle, along with a deceased deer came to rest along the roadway’s shoulder, police say.

That stretch of road was shut down for several hours so that police could investigate.

Police say the crash is still under investigation and alcohol is being investigated as a potential factor.

Anyone with information about the crash should call the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department at 810-664-1801.
