HURON COUNTY, Mich. - Monday marked day three of the search for a missing kayaker in Huron County.
22-year-old Curtis Herbon of Saint Clair Shores went missing Saturday afternoon while out on Lake Huron shortly after his boat took on water.
At the time of the incident, he was kayaking with 20-year-old Robert Lapensee also of Saint Clair Shores.
Authorities say Herbon was not wearing a life jacket but his family says he did know how to swim and they believe he panicked or had a difficult time when he went in the water.
Sheriff Kelly Hanson said there were no divers on the water Monday due to those high winds.
Now those winds actually stopped their searches earlier this week.
He says that murky conditions as well as rocks sometimes mess with the scanner systems used in the search so they weren’t using the sonars Monday.
The worst part of this all, he said, was definitely just speaking to that family about this tragedy.
“This is something that the family and friends are going to deal with for the rest of their life. In a matter of minutes, their life has been turned upside down," said Hanson.
Hanson added he hopes that divers can get back into the water Tuesday, but he reminds everyone to always wear a life jacket to that situations like this can possibly be prevented.
